Checklist for students looking to rent
Don’t know what to look for when choosing your student accommodation? We’re here to help by providing a checklist of important things to consider when finding the right rental for you.
Cost
This is no doubt the most important thing to consider when securing your student digs. Here are some questions we recommend asking:
- What is the rent?
- How much is the deposit?
- When is the rent due? Is it monthly or coinciding with student finance instalments?
- What’s included in the rent?
- What other bills might be expected that is not included in rent? (i.e. wifi)
Renting alone or sharing
When looking at properties it is worth thinking about what sort of property you’re after and whether it suits your needs effectively. Are you searching as a group of friends, a couple or even just looking for a room on your own? A few questions worth thinking about:
- Is there parking available? If so, how many spaces?
- How many people can the property house? (if you’re searching as a group)
- Do I have my own bathroom and kitchen facilities or are they shared?
Accommodation
These are questions to ask your landlord, as well as yourself or at least ask the person/people you might be sharing the property with, about the property:
- Are the bedroom sizes and condition suitable?
- Does the property or room come fully furbished?
- Is the bathroom suitable?
- Does the property have central heating?
- Is there any dampness?
- How safe is the neighbourhood?
Location and transport
When looking for the perfect student rental it is worth considering how far the property is from the University and what transport connections might be available to you. Here are some questions we’d recommend:
- How far are you from the University?
- How far are you from the town/city?
- Is there a frequent bus service to your University?
- How much are taxis from the town/city?
- Is there a train station nearby?
